While Sisyphus was in the mortal world, there was a war that Ares was watching but he became confused and frustrated when he noticed that no one on the battlefield died, so he found and released Thanathos and went to find Sisyphus. When Sisyphus was in Tartarus, he told Persephone that his wife didn't do a proper funeral thus allowing him to go back to the mortal world again. This time Thanathos had to forcefully drag him down to Tartarus and his punishment was to roll a boulder up a hill but rolled back down when it got close to the top.
