Enyo was a daughter of Zeus and Hera and a minor goddess of war. She is sometimes seen as one of the Graiae.

Reign

Enyo mainly ruled over war. However, she was only a minor war goddess as the main war gods were Ares and Athena. Enyo usually travelled with Ares and Eris into wars. Enyo was the bringer of devastation and destruction of cities as well as mass bloodshed.In the Iliad she was referred to as the waster of cities.

Mythology

Enyo was usually only seen riding into war along with Ares, Eris, Deimos, and Phobos.

Depiction and Personality

Enyo is usually depicted next to Ares, riding into war. She usually wore a helmet and was armed with a spear and torch.

Sacred Symbols and Animals

She had three different symbols;

The spear and torch were sometimes seen crossing as Enyo's symbol. She also had one sacred animal;

  • Swan - It is unknown why this was her sacred animal because swan's are usually depicted as peaceful animals.

Trivia

  • She is the female counterpart and companion of her brother, Ares.
  • She was closely identified with Eris, goddess of strife.
  • She is sometimes said to be Ares' twin.
  • Enyo means "warlike" in Greek.
  • In earlier myths she was known as Duellona.
