The Olive Tree is a tree sacred to Athena. When Athena and Poseidon were both vying for the position of patron deity of the city now called Athens both presented the city with a gift. Poseidon banged his Trident to the ground. Then in the middle of the city a water fountain came out of the ground. But the water was salt-water so no one could drink it. Athena caused an Olive Tree to grow. It had the potential to provide continual nourishment. Athens as it happened did not want to be a city known for aggression, they valued thought. Therefore, the Athenians decided that Athena's gift was the most practical and made her their patron deity. Since then the Olive Tree has become sacred to Athena.
