An Olympian is called that because they are one of the most powerful gods/goddesses that there is. There are 12 gods and goddesses on this council and they each have a throne on Mt. Olympus. They each also have a home and a temple on Mt. Olympus but some of them do not live on Mt. Olympus. In the past the Titans were the 12 Olympians but the gods took over.

The Gods took over the Titans.
Second Olympians
Hades was sent to the Underworld and the children of Zeus were added into the council, along with Aphrodite. From then on, Hades was only allowed to go to Olympus at the time of the winter solstice, the darkest day of the year.
Third Olympians
Heracles died and became immortal. Hebe and Heracles got married and Heracles became the defender of Olympus and Hebe became winebearer. Hermes, who had recently grown to be a full god, took her place.
