Demeter in her munificence, instructed Triptolemos in the art of agriculture, and gave him a winged chariot drawn by serpents (or in some versions dragons) so that he might travel the world spreading her gift.  Riding through the world he did so until he came to the cold realm of the Skythians.  Triptolemos taught King Lynkos.  Lyknos however did not share this information with his subjects.  Lyknos then tried to kill Triptolemos and while he failed, he did slay one of the dragon-serpents and drove the hero away.  In retaliation for the way Lyknos treated her valued attendant, Demeter transformed the king into a lynx and denied the Skythians the gift of agriculture.
